What about Windows 11 and an old unsupported PC?

Do I need to change my computer?

According to Microsoft, the answer is yes and for the following reasons:

Windows 11 enforces stricter hardware requirements than its predecessors primarily to enhance security and performance. These requirements include TPM 2.0, UEFI Secure Boot, and specific processor and RAM specifications. While upgrading may seem like an unnecessary cost, it ensures a more secure, stable, and efficient computing experience, and allows users to take advantage of new features and performance optimizations.

Security Enhancements:

TPM 2.0:Windows 11 leverages the Trusted Platform Module (TPM) 2.0 for hardware-based encryption and security features, providing a more secure foundation for the operating system and user data.
UEFI Secure Boot:This feature helps prevent malware from infecting the boot process, enhancing overall system security.
64-bit architecture:Windows 11 is exclusively 64-bit, which allows for better memory management and security features.

It’s however a big issue for many as it implies not only buying a new hardware but also getting all data and working environment back which is not simple.
In addition other components might become unsupported and not working anymore because of this change.

Tricks can be applied to migrate to Windows 11 for some time – how long? – but there’s no guarantee that next updates will work. And if updates are not applied it means that features like Windows Defender won’t be updated either which is critical unless another Antivirus protection is installed.

Whatever is the solution it won’t come at no cost.

What are the alternative options?

Since keeping older Windows versions means no more updates coming from Microsoft, consequences are mostly about Windows security tools which is very bad as of now.

Native Windows protection becomes outdated without an upgrade to version 11. It means that at least a very good antivirus becomes the least required to protect you.
